For the tenth consecutive year, the same number of years of the concession so far, the Container Terminal of Leixões set a new annual maximum of container handling in Leixões and strengthened its position of the biggest container terminal in the country.
On the year just finished, TCL handled 453,954 TEU, representing a growth of 1.2% regarding the previous maximum, set in 2008. Considering the number of containers, the registered increase was 1%, up to 290,171.
The new maximum was reached in a quite difficult year for the sector at international level, with an emphasized decrease of the world trade and the maritime transport of containers, and thus, on the activity of the main European and World ports and terminals.
Still, TCL was able to grow. Due to its operational capacity and to its commercial aggressiveness which enabled it to attract new vessels and to better serve its clients. And that’s what enabled TCL to recover from a first quarter of  losses and get to the end of December with earnings which, in the world context, is significant. And in between, in August, TCL was able to set a new maximum of monthly container handling!
Since the beginning of the concession in May 2000, TCL has already increased in more than 70% the TEU handling at the Port of Leixões. With that, the integration of the Container Terminal of Leixões in the logistic chains has been strengthened.
The challenge and the commitment are to keep the situation and, if possible, to strengthen the results.
