The Container Terminal of Leixões confirmed in 2009 its condition of the greatest national container terminal. After knowing the results of the main Portuguese container terminals, it was disclosed that TCL, already the biggest national operator, has even improved its performance, whereas its more direct competitors on the ranking have reduced their activity. In 2009, TCL set a new record of the Container Terminal of Leixões with 453,957 TEU. 1% more than the previous year, despite the global crisis that affected the sector. Liscont, which was the second on the national ranking, handled 203,760 TEU at the Container Terminal of Alcântara, which means 13.6% less than the previous year. Sotagus, concessionaire of the Container Terminal of Santa Apolónia, which was 3rd, went back 2.9%, having handled 214,621. Last but not least, PSA Sines handled at the Container Terminal of Sines 253,495 TEU, 9% more than the previous year. After all the calculations done, TCL and the Container Terminal of Leixões handled in 2009 200 thousand TEU more than the second operator and national container terminal.
