PORTS GROW WITH CONTAINERISED CARGO
2014-10-01

The handling of goods in national ports grew by 2.2% in the first eight months of the year, driven by the progression of 12.4% recorded in containerized cargo.
According to the data released by the IMT, between January and August, the main ports of the Continent handled 54.5 million tonnes, with containerized cargo reaching 18.2 million tonnes.
Considering the number of containers handled, in the first eight months of the year were accounted 1,659,059 TEU, representing a year on year jump of 15.3%. The TCL handled 441,225 TEU (plus 9.8%).
With this development, and also thanks to the continued breakdown of energy products handling, containerised cargo clearly leads discharges/loads in national ports.
In late August, the liquid bulk fell 10.1% to 18.8 million tonnes, the dry bulk rose 6% to 11.9 million tonnes, the general fractional cargo advanced 8% to 5.3 million tonnes and the ro-ro cargo sped up 131.5% to 399 thousand tonnes.
