To handle cargo at the Port of Luanda today is much quicker (and thus, it’s cheaper) than in a recent past. Today, the mean waiting time for the ships to berth at the Angolan capital is of only two to three days and the time of stay in the quay rounds three days. Figures which compare to two weeks of wait which was the rule not so long ago. On the other hand, the customs forwardness of the cargo is also much quicker now, or less lengthy. The mean time needed to withdraw a container from the Port of Luanda is now of 28 days, much less than the 80 days, once. The improvements were announced by the President of the Port of Luanda, Francisco Venâncio, and by the commercial director, Domingos Fortes, in the scope of the 3rd Meeting of the Ports of CPLP. For the improvement of the transit times of the goods at the port of the Angolan capital, some changes in the operational procedures were determining. This, together with the substantial increase in the taxes of stay of the containers in port: from USD 6/day to USD 30 /day from the 6th day and until the 30th day, reaching USD 90 /day from two months of stay. Very good news indeed for the Portuguese loaders as well as for the ship-owners which connect the national ports, Leixões in particular, to Angola, one of the main exporting markets.
