In 2009, the Port of Leixões handled 14.1 million tons, 9.5% less than last year. Still, and despite the crisis, last year’s record was the best ever.
The containerized cargo pulled the results with a new record, 454,503 TEU. Concerning the tonnage, 4.5 million tons were handled.
The performance of the Port of Leixões was strongly conditioned by the decrease of 12.8% on the liquid bulk handling, which stepped back more than a million tons.
On solid bulk two million tons were handled. On break bulk 346 thousand tons and on ro-ro 67 thousand tons were handled.
On a year of strong and generalized crisis, the behaviour of the Port of Leixões was quite positive, especially when compared to their main competitors, the Spanish ports in general and the ports of Vigo and Bilbao in particular, whose retreat was significantly higher on cargo handling.
