NATIONAL PORTS BEAT RECORD IN THE FIRST QUARTER

In the first quarter, the national major ports handled 19.1 million tonnes, more 6.8 % than in the same period of 2013 and an absolute record concerning the year’s first three months.
The general cargo increased 17.2 % to 8.3 million tonnes. The movement of containers exceeded 570,000 TEU, having progressed by 19.6% year-on-year.
The dry bulk advanced 11 % to 4.3 million tonnes, while the bulk liquid yielded 6% to 6.5 million tonnes.
Between January and March, Leixões handled 4.2 million tonnes (22.2% of the national total), representing a gain of 1.5 % to a new high. Regarding the containers, Leixões and TCL raised the bar to hit 13.1% beyond the 160,000 TEU.
Aveiro, Setúbal and Sines also beat their records in the first quarter.
