The corresponding rise of 8% in the containerized cargo avoided bigger losses in the cargo handling at the Port of Leixões, in September.
In September, Leixões handled 1.12 million tons, 16% less than in the corresponding month of 2009.
Solid bulk “drowned” 30% down to 496 thousand tons, and liquid bulk gave up 16% down to 178 thousand tons.
Instead, the containerized cargo grew about 8%, up to 421 thousand tons. Even if the number of TEU handled was around the same of last year’s.
Since the beginning of the year, the Port of Leixões accumulated on the first three quarters 10.96 million tons (10.85 millions one year ago).
The containerized cargo emphasizes itself positively, with a balance of 3.67 million tons (8% more), compensating thus the losses in the bulk.
