2011 WAS A RECORD YEAR TO LEIXÕES

The Port of Leixões set in 2011 a new record of cargo handling, registering 16,35 million tons.
In a difficult year for both national and European economy, the Port of Leixões grew 12% regarding 2010, and exceeded the previous record, set in 2008, right before the crisis which devastated the sector.
The export increase was determining for the good result of the Port of Leixões.
The loaded cargo grew 30% in corresponding terms, having reached 4.47 million tons.
The containerized cargo was one of the growing engines of Leixões in 2011. 5.4 million tons handled constitute an absolute record, and an increase of 8% regarding 2010.
TCL exceeded largely the 500 thousand TEU barrier, setting also a new reference in the national panorama.
At the Port of Leixões, last year, almost all of the cargo types were at high levels. Liquid bulk reached 7.51 million tons. Solid bulk went up to 2.5 million tons. Break bulk totalized 928 thousand tons.
